Going Green - Superfoods You Should Know

Got vegetables? If you’re struggling on that front (like a lot of us do), don’t give up. People are turning to green superfood powders to help them fill in the blanks. While no replacement for eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, superfood powders can be a powerful addition to a healthy lifestyle. I’m especially fond of these when I know I’m gearing up to have a busy day, or traveling and might not do the best job staying up on a healthy diet. Superfood powders are amazing at supplementing a nutrient-dense form of extra vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants, and detoxification support. The great news is – unlike many supplements – they come from whole food sources, and are therefore packaged in the nutritional proportions as nature intended. Add just a few teaspoons or tablespoons on food, into a smoothie, or a beverage. It’s that simple. They’re so easy to use and there’s so many different healthy “green” ingredients that can go into any green superfood blend. But if you’re just getting into these, what are the best superfood ingredients to look out for?

To save you time, here are a list of some of my favorites (and their benefits):

  • Spirulina

People are pretty wild about this stuff, and for good reason! If you want benefits to brain and neurological health (plus a good kick for your metabolism and liver), be sure to pick this one out of the lineup.

  • Chlorella

Chlorella has a lot of similar benefits to spirulina. It’s also a freshwater algae, like spirulina! People with completely plant-based diets gravitate towards it because it's rich in vitamins and minerals that aren’t plentiful in plants, especially vitamin B12.

  • Moringa

Moringa provides you with tons of antioxidants that help fight chronic inflammation and free radicals. This is great for some many things: the immune system, cancer, and more.

  • Stinging Nettle

Whoa there! Eat a stinging plant? Stinging nettle is extremely healthy (and no, it doesn’t sting you in powder form). It’s great for men’s health, allergy-related inflammation, energy levels, and more.

  • Digestive Enzymes

A pinch of these help you digest the nutritional content of all these ingredients, so they have the most optimal benefits to your health.

  • Probiotics

These tone your digestive system, help rebuild a struggling microbiome, while enhancing nutrient absorption, making for a grateful gut and a happy, healthy body. One last word about superfood green powders: watch out for wheatgrass! While tons of blends include it, it's not as nutrient dense as algae, and grasses in general don't digest well in the body (especially in those with gluten issues or celiac, even though it is technically gluten free). For the most part, green superfood powders are a win and full of healthy botanicals your body will appreciate. Working them into a morning smoothie can often be a nutrition powerhouse giving you more micronutrients in a single drink than many people will eat over several days. As I know many people have asked me what supplements/superfoods I take, I personally recommend Billy's Infinity Greens. I've gotten to know Billy (the founder) and he is incredibly intelligent and devoted to the purist possible ingredients. Everything is organic or wild-harvested (even better than organic), non-GMO, vegan, with no fillers of any kind. The proportions in his formulations is what makes them stand out to me above even some of the other top superfood brands. Not just greens, I also love his Infinity-C (all whole food sources of Vitamin C), his turmeric, and his Memory formula is also one of my faves. Click HERE if you want to check out some of the top superfood blends. Billy has created the coupon code ROBHERRING for 10% off! Whether you try this brand, or find other organic green superfoods, I hope you'll learn more about adding some of these powerhouses into your daily routine. :)
